Behind the numbers

HOW IT WORKS

Count the movement.
Keep people private.

A personal project with a simple ambition: make the rhythm of Central visible, without making individuals visible.

01

Two windows. Two gateways.

The planned cameras look out from inside our office building, at Queen’s Road Central and Wellington Street where they meet D’Aguilar Street.

02

Only counts leave the edge.

The proposed edge device counts line crossings locally. Only per-minute totals leave it. No video feed, face recognition, demographics or individual tracking.

03

A little perspective, over time.

After approximately 4–8 weeks of baseline collection and validation, compare current pedestrian flow with the same weekday and time.

Where do the moving demo numbers come from? +

This is a deterministic simulation, not live camera data or a validated estimate. It follows Hong Kong time and updates rolling-minute figures every 10 seconds. Queen’s Road has assumed commute and lunch peaks; LKF has assumed late-evening peaks, stronger Friday/Saturday nights, and more downhill movement after midnight. Absolute street counts, direction splits, vehicle counts and noise are assumptions.

Transport Department: Central pedestrian schemes provides corridor context and Friday/Saturday 19:00–05:00 pedestrianisation hours. MTR’s September 2026 patronage release provides a citywide context factor: 4.887 million average weekday domestic journeys ÷ 4.696 million January–September mean ≈ 1.041. This scales both assumed typical and simulated volumes; it is not Central station or street data. Sources were reviewed on 6 November 2026 and are pinned, not connected as live feeds.

The demo index compares the rolling-minute flow with a modeled same-time baseline. Quiet/Normal/Busy/Packed use assumed combined thresholds of 35/110/220 crossings per minute; these are animation levels, not safety thresholds. The chart includes only elapsed completed simulated minutes; the current hour is partial. No future observations, real weather or events are claimed. Full assumptions & source snapshot ↗

What does the index actually measure? +

Planned formula: current combined pedestrian flow ÷ typical combined flow for the same weekday and hour × 100. Vehicles are excluded. A crossing is not a unique visitor, and the same person can cross more than once. Two monitored corners do not measure the whole district, venue occupancy, spending or safety. Tier thresholds and the current-flow averaging window will be documented before live publication.

How is the night-economy ratio defined? +

LKF-gate simulated crossings since 18:00 divided by Queen’s Road simulated crossings from 09:00–18:00 on the same Hong Kong calendar date. It is unavailable before 18:00 and partial while the evening is in progress. The windows are unequal: this describes relative flow, not economic output or occupancy.

What happens to footage and missing data? +

No cameras are connected to this preview. The live design processes frames locally, without long-term footage storage. Short calibration samples may be retained during the first approximately two weeks and deleted after manual-count review. Visible CCTV notices, a Privacy Impact Assessment and local privacy-lawyer review are launch requirements. Missing or stale readings will be marked unavailable, never silently replaced by zeros or demo data.

Can I quote or partner with LKF Pulse? +

You may share this preview as a concept, provided all figures are explicitly labeled illustrative. Do not cite these sample figures as observations. When live, snapshots are intended to include source, coverage, time window, Hong Kong timestamp and methodology version. LKF Pulse is an independent personal project; no government endorsement or affiliation with Lan Kwai Fong Group is claimed.
